The Gimblett Gravels is a special terroir producing some of the world's finest full bodied red wines which combines the French concept of terroir with modern day thinking to define, protect and market wine. In what is believed to be a first for winegrowers in the New World (wine growing countries outside Europe) Gimblett Gravels is basing the ultimate designation of their district according to a tightly specified soil type. The Gimblett Gravels appellation, covering 800ha, is strictly determined by the gravely soils laid down by the old Ngaruroro River. Wines from the Gimblett Gravels have won over 400 Gold Medals and 140 trophies in domestic and international wine competitions since 2001. This area is tightly held by most leading New Zealand winery companies which means that very few true Gimblett Gravels vineyards genuinely come to the market for sale.
