Trained as a medical scientist withroles in the management of hospital services, his commitment then was forpeople and the community, and this continues to drive him today.

Community involvement is importantto Derek. He has been involved in coaching Bay of Plenty sport, TaurangaRepertory Theatre, and the Arts Council. He has just completed three years ascrew on Coastguard TECT Rescue and is Chairman of the Tauranga Maritime Trust.Combining his extensive experience of health and business management, Derekrecently stood for election to the District Health Board.
